Vaughn D. Toler

Vaughn D. Toler went to be with the Lord and passed family members on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at Boone Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Vaughn was born to Ira and Merl Toler in Sun Hill, West Virginia on February 18, 1931, and later moved with his family to Clear Fork, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents Vaughn was preceded in death by grandson Aaron Rogers; brothers, Ira Toler Jr., Arley Toler, William Toler; and sisters, Elouine Elkins, and Belva Simpson.
Vaughn is survived by his wife and sweetheart of 61 years, Anita Puckett Toler. Additional immediate surviving family members include daughter, Susan Rogers and husband George of Wake Forest, North Carolina; son, Joseph Toler and wife Teresa of Madison, West Virginia; son, Daniel Toler and wife Katy of Madison, West Virginia; and sons, John Toler of Raleigh, North Carolina and David Toler of Mabscott, West Virginia.
Surviving siblings are brother, Donald Toler and wife Helen of Danville, West Virginia; and sisters, Mary Ellen Ellis and husband Richard of Gilbert, West Virginia, and Marlene Ford of Edmond, Oklahoma.
Successive generation surviving family members are Sarah, Patrick and Simon Miller of Pittsburgh, PA; Mary, Luis and Anita Mendoza of Snow Camp, NC; Elliot Toler of Mabscott, WV; Kamila Rogers of Raleigh, NC; Elizabeth and Dwight Pavlovic of Morgantown, WV; Clenton and Anna Toler of Madison, WV; Vaughn, Ross and Aubrey Toler of Raleigh, NC; and Chase and Will Toler of Madison, WV.
Vaughn and Anita were members of the United Methodist Church in Madison, WV for 45 years and greatly enjoyed participating in numerous aspects of church life over the years.
Vaughn graduated from Oceana High School and was a 1954 graduate of the West Virginia School of Mines. Vaughn then served in the U. S. Army prior to starting his mining profession. He had a rewarding career in the mining industry with several companies in central Appalachia, plus a brief time in Florida, culminating with becoming a successful mine owner.
In addition to his professional accomplishments Vaughn’s interests included playing bluegrass and country music for which he was well known in the area. Other than family members, few knew Vaughn was a talented artist, a sponsor for many causes and individuals, and greatly enjoyed reading everything from classic literature to current authors of his day. Vaughn will be remembered as a loving and devoted family man, a hardworking coal miner and a positive community influence.
A memorial service will be held at the Handley Home Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2012. Visitation will be held for two (2) hours preceding the service.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers charitable contributions be made to the Madison Methodist Church or a charity of individual choice.
