Sybil Edna Morris McCoy, 99, of Madison, WV, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026. Born on December 13, 1926, in Stella, North Carolina, Sybil lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and education.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Kirk McCoy; her mother, Lessie Helen Pittman Morris; her father, Jason Albert Morris; her stepmother, Ada Morris; her sister, Bessie Morris; brothers, Jason Morris Jr., Fredrick Morris, Allen Morris, Jason (Tid) Morris, and Delma Morris; dear sisters-in-law, Lonnie McCoy and Jean Gregory McCoy; and her cherished grandson, Randell (Sonny) Foxx.
Sybil was a graduate and valedictorian of Maysville High School, Class of 1944. She continued her education, earning a bachelor’s degree from Concord University and a master’s degree from Marshall University. Sybil dedicated many years to teaching in the schools of McDowell and Boone County, WV, and she found great joy in reconnecting with former students throughout her life.
A faithful Christian and devoted servant of the Lord, Sybil was an active member of Bible Baptist Church. She served in various ministries, including as a Pioneer Girls leader, her card ministry, and by sharing her famous chocolate chip cookies with her church family and friends. She was also a proud member of the Boone County WV Retired School Teachers Association and the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority.
Sybil’s greatest joy was her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She is survived by her son, James Kirk (Gayle) McCoy of Harvest, AL; her daughter, Judy Ann McCoy (Randy) Foxx of Madison, WV; siblings, James (Hay) Morris of Stella, NC, Fenner Morris of New Bern, NC, and Annie (Tence) Arnold of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Cherri Foxx (Doug) Price, Christopher Foxx, and Amber McCoy (Josh) Peppers; great-grandchildren, Zechariah Foxx, Haleigh Foxx (Cody) Hayes, Kirk (Ryleigh) Price, John (Makaila) Price, Christina Price, Elijah Peppers, and Lincoln Peppers; great-great-grandchildren, Rowan Hayes, Stella Hayes, and August Ann Price; as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM, with Gary Hess and Pastor Mike Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Park, Danville, WV.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International at PO Box 24, Madison, WV 25130, or to the Bible Baptist Church Faith Promise Mission Fund at PO Box 261, Danville, WV 25053.
Sybil's legacy of kindness, faith, and dedication to others will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
