Shelvey Jean Duty

May 2, 1937 — January 20, 2024

Foster, WV

Shelvey Jean Duty, 86 years old of Foster, WV, passed away on Saturday, January the 20, 2024, at her home surrounded by her children. Shelvey was the loving and devoted wife of J.B. Duty and they shared 63 happy years of marriage. She was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Sylvia Lane of Dry Ridge, KY; her sister Virginia Lane Sallee of Texas; and her husband and soul mate Judson (J.B.) of Foster.

She leaves behind three children, Cindy (John) Steele of Foster, Doug (Kim) Duty of Foster, and Jinnie Knight of Foster; six granddaughters, Heather Elkins (Shann), Heidi Steele (Daniel Reedy), Holly Corder (Scott), Bradi Jo Duty, Katie Duty, Alli Knight and one grandson, Cameron Knight (Katelyn).  She also had 11 great grandchildren, Caroline (Peyton), Cade, Cole, Camden, Jaren, Jakayla, Braxton, Landon, Mason, Mazi, and Atticus.   She also leaves her loving brother Roger (Anna) Lane of Norwalk, OH.  Shelvey had many nieces and nephews and special “nephew" Linda Fox (John) of Foster and "sister" Wanda Ballard also of Foster. She also leaves her dearest friend of nearly 80 years, Jean Ball of Hewett.

Shelvey was born and raised in Hewett and grew up playing piano at the Spencer Methodist Church and was also a faithful member of the Rock Creek Church of Christ where she leaves behind many loving and cherished friends.  Shelvey and J.B. retired in 1993 and were truly blessed to enjoy nearly 25 years of happy healthy retirement together and loved spending time with the grandchildren and playing golf. She retired from the Bank of Danville where she worked as Executive Secretary and would always say how much she missed her customers after she retired. Shelvey was a loving, kind, and generous person, always finding the best in everyone she met and welcomed friends and family with open arms and a smile. She cooked endless meals for her ever-growing family for holidays, birthdays, and special occasions and her cooking will be missed by many, especially her baked steak and gravy and peanut butter fudge.

A special thank you to Melanie, Libby and Stacy of Kanawha Valley Hospice.
