Shannon Anne Barker

January 5, 1974 — January 14, 2024

Foster, West Virginia

Shannon Anne Barker, born January 5, 1974, in Madison, West Virginia, lived a life of love and faith.

She is survived by her husband, Brundy Barker; three daughters, Mary, Hannah, and Josie; her parents, Elmer and Elizabeth Halstead; brother, Shane Halstead; her father- and mother-in-law, Bobby and Diane Barker, and five adoring cats.

Shannon graduated salutatorian of Sherman High School in 1992 and graduated from West Virginia State University with an associate degree in applied science in 1994. On March 23, 1997, Shannon dedicated her life to Christ at Drawdy Church of Christ and, later that same year, to Brundy on April 5th. Shannon worked as an MA for Dr. Curnutte from 1994 to 2000. Soon after, she welcomed her first and second daughters in April 2001 and her youngest in June 2006. Shannon devoted her life to raising her girls in kindness, care, and faith. She was an example of grace, selflessness, perseverance, and beauty. Shannon fought ovarian cancer for twenty years, trying to never let it stop her from doing the things she loved like spending time with her family outdoors or playing Cahoots, attending all her daughters’ sporting events, helping them in school (she should have honorary degrees in English and Criminal Justice from all the assignments she proofread), being a friend to anyone who needed one, and helping others through their own struggles with cancer or twins. Despite the limitations the disease forced upon her body, Shannon did not give up, but continued to be wherever she was needed or simply wanted to be. The Barkers are members at Alum Creek Church of Christ, and they regularly volunteer at the Sojourner’s Women’s Shelter in Charleston—Shannon was right there with them on December 30, 2023. She was a fighter, a wonderful daughter, wife, and mother. She will be dearly missed, but the family is overjoyed that Shannon will no longer have to fight, that she has found peace in her home in heaven.

The Barker family would like to thank the Churches of Christ at Alum Creek, Drawdy, Central in Martinsburg, Oakwood Road in Fairmont and any other congregations or individuals, for all their love, support, prayers, food, and flowers. They would also like to thank Drs. Schiano and Allen for helping Shannon throughout her treatments; and all the staff at CAMC Women’s and Children’s and Hubbard Hospice House for all they did to ease her pain and allow the family to stay with her. Most importantly, they thank God for blessing them with such a wonderful woman and for promising her peace and their chance to see her again in heaven.

On Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Alum Creek Church of Christ, a visitation will be held from 11:00 – 12:30 with a memorial service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Julia Price Breast Cancer Foundation and/or the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter in Charleston.
