Roy Lee (Speedie) Smith, 73, of Van, WV went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 1, 2025 after a long illness.
He was born March 1, 1952 in Madison, WV to Mary Martin Smith Jarrell and Roy Lee Smith. A 1970 graduate of Scott High School, he attended the Southern Branch of Marshall University where he played basketball. He was employed as an underground coal miner until retirement.
Speedie served as scout master of Boy Scout Troop 250 in Van, WV. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, bird watching, painting and spending time with his family. He always had a good story to tell! He was a member of UMWA and a member of Bigson Freewill Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Gwen; daughters Mary (Kevin) McCarty of Danville, WV and Amanda (Keith) Hoosier of Wharton, WV; 5 grandchildren: Jordan, Jarod (Cloey), Jax, Jaylen, and Seth; and 1 great-grandson, Reed. He is also survived by a host of family, friends, and loved ones.
In addition to his parents, Speedie was preceded in death by his Mammaw Opal Martin.
Services to be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV, with Rev. David Cook and Tim Spratt officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Burial to follow at Family Gardens on Low Gap Road, Danville, WV.
