Richard “Neil” Nester died peacefully in his sleep this past Thursday in his home on Six Mile Road, where he had lived and raised his family for nearly fifty years, at 68 years of age.
Neil is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Debbie Nester and their son, Joshua Nester, both of Six Mile. He is also survived by his “Aunt” Jewell Garrett of Huntington, West Virginia. Neil was preceded in death by his parents William and Eleanor Nester of Spencer, West Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eldon and Irene Hager of Six Mile.
Neil started his career as a coal miner working for Westmoreland Coal Company in 1975. He spent many of his years working as a Chief Electrician and later as a mine and preparation plant Superintendent for Rick Abraham of Logan County. For fifteen years Neil was co-owner of the Union company Laurel Coal Corporation with Ray Peters, operating various mines in Boone and Logan counties. For the previous eight years up until his death he worked as a West Virginia State Mine Inspector.
Neil will be remembered as a talented musician and singer who was skilled at playing the guitar and dobro. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors both as a hunter and fisherman and he also loved riding ATVs with his family and friends through the hills of West Virginia.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August the 27th at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia. A brief graveside service will follow at the Montgomery Hager Cemetery on Six Mile Road.
