Michael W. Vickers, 71, of Alkol went to be with the Lord on May 23, 2023, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center after a long illness.
Born October 8, 1951, to Homer and Mildred Vickers. Mike was a 1970 graduate of Duval High School. After high school he joined the Army and served in Vietnam in the 194th Armed Brigade in the Artillery. While in combat, Mike earned a Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Sharpshooter badge. Mike was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Woodville. He was a coal miner with Westmoreland Coal Company and retired from Hobet Mining.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer & Mildred Vickers and his in-laws Junior & Melba Estep; brother Denzil Vickers; and brother-in-law Robert Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Kathy Vickers and their two daughters Karrie (Chad) Newsome and Kasey (Chris) Vickers; his grandchildren, Austin and Sara Newsome; his siblings Carolyn (Richard) Hill, Johnny (Brenda) Vickers, Sandra (Mike) McLaughlin and Libby Smith. He is also survived by his in-laws, a host of nieces and nephews and “Lil Man” Mason Powers. He will be missed by all.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to his caregiver, Danielle Powers and the staff of UK Medical Center for all they’ve done and especially Amber Bach.
A funeral service for all those who knew and loved him will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 29th at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV with Kurt Dragoo and Ronnie Linville officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Yawkey, WV with by military burial rites by American Legion Post 111 of Hamlin, WV.
Friends and family may call Sunday, May 28th from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
