John Alfred Hunter

John Alfred Hunter, Ed.D., 92, passed away in Edmond, Oklahoma.
He was born in Pax, WV in 1921 to Harry and Gertrude Hunter. He grew up in Madison, WV, where his father was a funeral director and owner of Hunter & Hunter Funeral Home.
Volunteering in the Army Air Force in 1942, he was assigned to the European Theater of Operations and flew combat missions over Germany as a crewmember of the B-17 Bomber, the "Flying Fortress." After the war, Dr. Hunter returned to Madison where he became a funeral director and helped to run Hunter & Hunter, Inc. He received his A.B. degree at Morris Harvey in 1964, his M.A. at Marshall University in 1965, and his Ed.D. at West Virginia University in 1971.
In the 1960's, Dr. Hunter began working as a professor of English at West Liberty University, where he served as Chairman of the English Department, sat on the West Virginia Board of Regents and taught for 30 years. In addition, he was a poet and author whose writings were published in the Mountain Review, Charleston Gazette-Mail State Magazine, Morgantown Sunday Messenger, Morris Harvey's Laiglon, Quadlit, Reflections, and The Wheeling Intelligencer. He also had a book of poetry titled From the Branches published in 1977.
Survivors include two sisters, Bobbie Plants of Madison, WV and Jeanne Carter of Sandston, VA; five children; and 16 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m.on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Memory Gardens in Madison with Military Graveside Rites by VFW Post 5578 Madison.
