Jewell Elaine Garrett, 93, of Barboursville, WV and formerly of Boone County, WV, was promoted to Glory to be with Jesus on January 25, 2026. She was born on July 20, 1932 in Madison, WV, the daughter of the late Mary Estil (Sanders) Hager and William Edgar Hager.
Jewell was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Delores Garrett, and her loving husband, Harold “Pat” Garrett. Also preceding her in death were her sisters Nona Hager, Erma Hager, Euna Ball, Rhema Doss and her brothers Elmo Hager, Randall Hager, Eldon Hager.
Jewell graduated from Marshall University with a Master’s Degree in Education and was a school teacher for the Logan County School system for over 20 years. She taught first grade at Whitman Grade School and later was a science teacher at Sharples High School, where her students learned “more than they bargained for in the sciences!”. While at Sharples High School, she sponsored the Science Club, the Prayer Club, and The Passion of Christ school plays every year. Because of her love for the Lord, she created her beloved KIDS FOR CHRIST program to encourage young people to worship and serve Christ. Jewell was also active in VBS and Scouting at the Justice Christian Church and the Calvary Baptist Church, where she was affectionately known by the youngsters as the “craft lady”. Jewell was the epitome of a life-long learner whose thirst for knowledge led her to explore the sciences, art, literature, politics, writing, and the Bible! She loved to create, design, build, experiment, garden, travel and most of all, she loved her family! She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses: Lana Turner and John Kovach of Chapmanville, WV; Glen Garrett of Myrtle Beach, SC; Teresa and Bobby Paden of Huntington, WV. She is survived by her grandchildren: Anthony Turner of Green Sea, SC; Amy Turner of Chapmanville, WV; Jeremy Garrett of Huntington, WV; Ryan Garrett of South Point, Ohio; Chris Bourne of Huntington, WV; Heather Muncy of Huntington, WV. She is also survived by her great grandchildren: Caleb Turner, Eric Turner, and Haley Turner of Green Sea, SC; Ava Garrett, Jack Garrett, Noah Harless, Destiny Faith Harless, and Matthew Harless of Huntington, WV. In addition Jewell leaves behind a host of beloved nieces and nephews!
The family would like to thank the following for their love and kindness shown to Jewell and her family: all of our family and friends, Wyngate Assisted Living, A Special Touch In Home Care, the Emogene Dolin Hospice House of Huntington, WV, members of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan, Pastors Jim Musgrave, Nick Korestskyy, and Jeff Garrett; musician, Rachel Noe-Maynard; and the staff of Handley Funeral Home of Danville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, February 2, 2026 at the Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on February 2nd. The burial will immediately follow the funeral and be at the Danville Memorial Park, Indian Grave Road, Danville, WV.
