Jerry Lynn Tawney

Jerry Lynn Tawney of Danville, West Virginia, passed away at home on September 26, 2026. 

Jerry was born September 12, 1939, the son of the late Sigel and Mertie Tawney. He was a 1958 graduate of Scott High School.

On July 13, 1961, Jerry married Hannah Ruth Butler, beginning a life together filled with family, faith, and many treasured memories.

Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army. He continued his education at Morris Harvey College and later graduated from Marshall University with a master’s degree in counseling.

Throughout his life, Jerry held various positions and pursued a number of career opportunities. Among them, he served as manager of Cox’s Department Store.

Jerry was known for his playful spirit and wonderful sense of humor. He loved to joke, cut up, and pull pranks, especially on his children. His teasing and laughter brought joy to those around him and created many memories his family will cherish for years to come.

His faith was an important part of his life. Jerry was a devoted member of the Danville Church of Christ for more than 60 years, where he shared many years of worship and fellowship with his church family.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Tammy Walker of St. Petersburg, Florida; his son, Jerry Lynn Tawney Jr. and wife, Amanda, of Oxford, North Carolina; his grandson, Jerry Lynn Tawney III of Oxford, North Carolina; and his longtime partner, Helen Miller of Twilight.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Hannah Ruth Butler Tawney; his brothers, Billy, Harold, John, and Dana Tawney; and his sisters, Ella, Helen, and Gaynell.

Jerry leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of faith, family, service, laughter, and love that will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia with Brandon Blankenship and Tom Satterfield officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Park on Indian Grave Road, Danville, WV.
