Jeffrey Scott “Scooter” Smith, 65, of Peytona, WV passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 9th.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Jean Smith; grandparents Charles and Ella Burgess; extended family Boody and Mary Dotson, Damon R. Dotson, and Ronnie L. Perdue.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Sherry, the love of his life and his constant source of strength and support, whose love, partnership, and friendship were the foundation of their beautiful life together. In addition to his wife, those left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Jerry Smith (Valerie) of WV and Michael Smith of TX; sisters-in law Alice Ferrell (Lester) of WV and Charlotte Perdue of WV; a special cousin, Joe Jarrell (Twana), lovingly stepped in and became Scott’s “bonus dad,” offering guidance, support, and unwavering care throughout his life. He also leaves behind his very special hunting partners, his great-niece, Lindsey Williams, and great-nephew, Ryan Skeens, with whom he shared countless memories in the outdoors that will forever be treasured. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
He attended East Bank High School and was a graduate of the Class of 1978. He dedicated his life to the mining industry, with many years of experience in both underground and surface mining. At the time of his passing, he was employed by Blackhawk Mining, Inc., where he served as a foreman, and was respected for his knowledge and leadership across many aspects of mining. Those he worked alongside were more than colleagues – they became lifelong friends and like family to him. Ron “RC” Charles was not only his boss, but a mentor, trusted confidant, and a true best friend. Their bond extended far beyond the workplace. Their friendship was built on mutual respect and loyalty, and that meant a great deal to him.
In his spare time, he loved deer hunting and cherished every moment spent outdoors. He found true joy not only in the hunt, but in the time shared and memories made along the way. He had a servant’s heart and was always the first to offer help to anyone in need. Blessed with many talents, from welding and mechanical work to carpentry and electrical projects, he could fix or build anything. More importantly, he gave his time and skills generously, never expecting anything in return. He was simply happy to help anyone whose path he crossed.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 16, 2026 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV, officiated by Walter Gore. Burial to follow at Boone Memorial Park in Madison, WV.
