James Patton Goode, 78, of Julian, WV passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026 at WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital.

James was born to the late Earl and Bertha Goode. He was a proud Army Veteran who honorably served his country as a helicopter gunman in the Vietnam War. After returning home, James dedicated his career to the coal mining industry. He retired after decades of hard work and commitment.

James is survived by his wife, Joan, of 57 years. Together, they had 3 children. He also leaves behind one sister, Elender Davis; and six grandchildren: Joanetta (Stevie) Lester, Kacey Goode, John P. Goode Jr. (Casey), Nikki (Chris) Mitchell, Lillian Goode, and Jasmine Myers. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren, whom he cherished.

He is preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Earlene Lester and Bernice Proffitt; his beloved three children, James Jeffrey Goode, John Patrick Goode Sr., and Joleen Frances Goode.

An avid fisherman, James found peace and happiness in the quiet moments spent by the water, casting his line, and sharing stories with those he loved. He was equally devoted to spending time with his great-grandchildren, whose laughter and energy filled his heart with boundless joy.

James’s legacy of love, strength, and dedication will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
