In Loving Memory of Homer Clifton Whitman

September 19, 1937 – May 17, 2025

Homer C. Whitman, 87, born and raised in Peach Creek, WV, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior.

After starting a family and serving time in the Army, he moved to Huntington, WV, residing there for over 40 years. After retiring from Inco, him and his wife then moved to Boone County, WV and resided there for 25 years.

A devout Christian and tireless ambassador for Jesus Christ, Homer never missed an opportunity to share the Good News, whether it was in the neighborhood, making house calls, or during a game of horse shoes (which he dominated).

Homer lived with joyful purpose. He was a master gardener, coaxing beauty and bounty from the soil with the same care and devotion he gave to people. His garden was not only a sanctuary of blossoms and vegetables, but also a place of wisdom, laughter, and the occasional surprise with his haunted masks.

Homer had a gift for fun and a flair for mischief. He could be found schooling grandkids in cornhole, launching horseshoes, being an avid golfer, enjoying ping pong with uncanny precision, or orchestrating epic sleigh rides that became legendary winter memories. But nothing delighted him more than a well timed prank. Whether it was a jump-scare behind the shed or a spooky fee-fi-fo-fum in the dark. Homer’s lighthearted spooks were part of his charm and no one was ever truly safe from a good natured fright.

He loved kids and made everyone feel like one, no matter their age. From rowdy family game nights to quiet moments around a garden bed, Homer brought people together with joy, humility, and a spirit of playfulness that never aged.

Homer is survived by the love of his life, of 66 years, Daphenia "Daffy" Haynes-Whitman, his devoted wife; two sons, Russell (Sheila) Whitman and Homer "Sam"(Mary) Whitman and one daughter, Sophia Whitman-Borden; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and lots of wonderful nieces and nephews, each of whom carries a piece of his heart and humor. His legacy of faith, family, and fun will live on through them and through every green bean plant, horse shoe pit, and joyful prank, pulled in his honor.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant something, play something, or spend good quality time with family or friends to make lasting memories, just like Homer would’ve.

Well done, good and faithful servant. We’ll see you again, just not before you jump out from behind a bush one last time.
