Hilda Marie Fitzwater of Mt. Sterling, KY (Formerly of Madison, WV) went to her Heavenly home on Friday, September 19th, 2025 after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. David Lee Dooley I and her second husband, Rev. Lowell Fitzwater. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Isaac and Mary Estelle Kitchen. She was also preceded in death by her sisters JoAnn Scott, Barbara Reynolds, Shirley Kitchen, Phyllis Spurlock, Helen Layne and by a brother, Charles Alvin Ramey.
Hilda was born on October 27th, 1940. She spent most of her life in Boone Co. WV. She spent many years working as the main biscuit maker for Tudor’s Biscuit World in Danville, WV. She was very active in church and spent most of her years at Washington Heights Church of God (Madison, WV) and Sumerco Church of God (Lincoln Co. WV). She served in many capacities but loved being the church pianist. She also taught various Sunday School Classes and served as church treasurer and secretary and played piano and sang for “The Sunshine Girls”. She also loved Craigsville Campmeeting and spent every summer she could there with friends and family.
The light of her life, however, was her grandkids. She loved them fiercely and made many memories with them as often as she could. When they were younger, they had many trips with grandma to Build-A-Bear at the Charleston Town Center, Trips to Toys-R-Us, Chuck E Cheese, local parks and simply fun times hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.
For her children and grandchildren, she left a lasting legacy of her faith and taught us all about how important it was to love and serve Jesus. She will be missed in an incredible way, and always had a goal to make memories for everyone that would last a lifetime.
Hilda is survived by her children: Susan (Scott) Haynes of Cynthiana, KY, David (Anna) Dooley of Mt. Sterling, KY. Stepchildren: James Fitzwater of Ravenswood, WV, Dan (Naomi) Fitzwater of Bristow, VA, Debbie Wells of Ripley, WV. Grandchildren: Garrett Dooley of Oklahoma City, OK, Morgan Haynes of Pedro, OH, Madison Dooley of Mt. Sterling, KY and Kara Haynes of Cynthiana, KY. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. The family would also like to give a special "Thank You" to Windsor Personal Care of Mt. Sterling for the wonderful and compassionate care they gave to our Mom for close to two years.
A celebration of Hilda’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 25th at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV. Friends may call beginning at 12:00pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Low Gap, WV.
**Because Mom's favorite color was red, we would like to ask everyone to wear red if possible to honor her memory.
