Burial
Frederick Durol Massey Sr., 72, of Orgas, WV, left this world peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after battling esophageal cancer.
He was born January 17, 1953 in Charleston, WV, and was the son of his late father, Randall Durol Massey, and late mother/grandmother, Irene Massey, and grandfather, Frank Massey, who raised him. He was raised by immense love and guidance from his grandmother and sister/aunt, Mildred Massey. “Gran” Irene Massey instilled in him his strong work ethic, love, and family values, which shaped him into the man he became. He was a graduate from Sherman High School, he was a dedicated husband, father, a proud coal miner, and a member of UMWA for 35 years. He was known among his colleagues for his strength, leadership, bravery, and unwavering commitment to safety and his fellow miners. He was a true example of the grit and resilience that defines the coal fields. His family remembers him coming home from work late at night, his face and hands covered in coal dust, and the badge of his tireless dedication.
Fredrick is survived by his beloved wife, his greatest love and lifelong partner, Karen Massey. His greatest joy was seeing her smile. He and Karen shared a deep and abiding love for 54 and a half years. Their life together was a beautiful example of partnership, support, and endless affection. He is survived by his son, Frederick Durol Massey, Jr. and his spouse, Monica, of Fosterville, WV. Frederick is also survived by a host of loving friends and relatives, including his chosen brother and best friend, John Chapman and his spouse, Peggy, of VA.
Funeral services for Frederick will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2026 with Ginger Dials officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial to follow at Pineview Cemetery in Orgas, WV.
