Obituary

Eugene Ewell Spurlock, Sr., 90, of Orgas, WV passed away Sunday, February 15, 2026.

Eugene was born April 10, 1935 to the late Bruce and Elvetta Bias Spurlock. Eugene was a man of many talents. He began his career with Carolina Lumber Company, then later, worked for Hamer Lumber Company. He was employed by Eastern Associated Coal Company and retired from mining at age 55. After mining, he began working as “trim-work man” in housing complexes, which led to helping his son build his home. At age of 72, he worked for Flint’s Hardware Store in Sylvester, WV. He also was a member and helped build Keith Full Gospel Church.

Eugene enjoyed woodworking, fishing, sitting around a campfire with his family and friends, and enjoying his grandchildren. He loved the camp that he built at Moncove Lake. Lastly, but certainly not least, Eugene had a love for western shows, such as Gun Smoke, Bonanza, and The Rifleman.

He was the most humble, sweet man. He was always one to lend help to anyone in need.

In addition to his parents, preceding Eugene in death is his daughter, Deborah Collins; grandson, Jason Spurlock; brothers, Darrell Spurlock, Harold (Linda) Spurlock, Denzil Spurlock, Sherrill (Phyllis) Spurlock, Lanny Spurlock, and Denver Spurlock; sister, Nadine (Cecil) McKinney; brother-in-law, Reldo Miller; sisters in law, Vivian Spurlock and Sue Spurlock.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Stacy Spurlock; son, Eugene (Sherri) Spurlock, Jr; daughter, Christina Hancock and Kathy (Rick) Becker; grandchildren, Kim and Kevin Britton, Deborah and Brandon Workman, Terry Lee Davis, Christopher Hancock, Toby and David Wager, Melissa and Rodman Putt; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Summer, and Coltin Harvey, Landon Spurlock, Sadie and Brandon Wager, Ezra Workman, Ryan, Evan, Avery, Ted, Addison, and Jasmine Putt; brothers, Wayne, Gilbert (Ruth), Jerry (Ruby), Jackie, and Ricky (Tami); sisters, Esta Miller, Juanita (Harrison) Brown, Linda Clay, and Brenda (Ray) Cook. Eugene is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Services for Eugene will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 20, 2026 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV, with Eugene Spurlock, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial to follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV.
