Donald Louis Lucas (Don) was born July 20, 1945 in Ranger, WV, son of Mack and Virla Lucas. Don was preceded in death by two brothers: Bud Lucas, Barboursville, Harry Lucas, Ranger and two sisters Sylvia Casto, Clearwater, FL and Ellen Adkins, Ranger. He is Survived by one brother Lonnie and Lonnie wife Carol of Barboursville and one sister Carla Johnson and her husband Wayne of Alabama. Additional survivors include Mary Lucas (Bud’s Widow) and Gina Baldwin, Don’s devoted partner of many years and caregiver during his illness. Don was the father of three sons Charley(Shannon), Brian (Michele) and Chris (Melisa). He is also survived by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Don graduated from Harts High School and Marshall University. He began his teaching/coaching career at Emmons Elementary School in Huntington. From Emmons Don went to Salt Junior High, where he was quite successful in coaching. Later he moved to Beverly Hills Junior High, where he had several successful seasons in basketball, football, and track. While at Beverly Hills he also had several championship Teams in all three sports. Don coached at Huntington East High School during its closing seasons and led the team to the state tournament for the first time since the 1950’s.
Autumn Williamson will provide special singing at the cemetery. Bob Hogsett is in charge of ministerial services.
McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, WV is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6pm to 8pm Thursday. Burial will be in Lucas Family Cemetery, Ranger, WV.
