David Eugene Smith

David Eugene Smith, 74, of Danville passed December 10, 2023 at Hillcrest Healthcare Center, Danville, WV.

David was preceded in death by his wife Patty Ann Spradling Smith; parents Glen Eugene & Edith Nelson Smith; and brother Richard D Smith.

David is survived by step-daughter Lisa (Robert) Cullin; step granddaughters Erin & Elissa Cullin; sister Glenda (Ervin) Webb; nieces Dr. Ginger Chasolen, Evely (Jon) Garrett, Faith (Johnny) Cooper; and nephew Shannon (Jennifer) Webb.

After graduating from Scott High School in 1968, David served 4 years in the US Navy, aboard the USS Damato DD 871. He attended WV School of Technology, Montgomery, WV then obtained a degree in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning.

Before the explosion at Ferrell Mine David realized coal mining wasn't his calling (the explosion was his shift). David was like a cat with 9 lives. David & wife Patty Ann & her daughter made their way to Titusville, Fl and eventually David went to work at Cape Canaveral Space Center and was part of the Atlas Mistle Launch crew that made 100 successful launches. (Yes, our cell phones & TV satellites).

David attended Danville Baptist Church, Danville, WV,

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Handley Funeral Home, in Danville, WV with Tom Bias officiating. Burial will follow in Family Gardens on Low Gap Road, Madison, WV with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison, WV.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
