Danny Lee Broom, 89, a former resident of Madison, West Virginia, passed away on November 6, 2024, after a long and meaningful life. Born on August 16, 1935, in Logan County, West Virginia, Danny graduated from Logan County High School before enlisting in the Navy. He served on the U.S.S. BEALE, a Seek Strike Destroyer Submarine Killer, as part of the Atlantic fleet. His time in the Navy remained one of his most cherished memories. Although a severe stroke in March 2023 affected his short-term memory, he fondly recalled his adventures with lifelong friends, including crossing the equator and hitchhiking from Norfolk, VA, back to Logan County, WV, after his honorable discharge.
After his military service, Danny returned to his beloved West Virginia, eager for some mischief while managing the family business, Broom/Anderson Amusement Company. Known for his humor and fierce protectiveness, Danny had a big heart and a sly smile that could brighten any room, alongside a scowl that could clear it. Outspoken yet generous, he was fiercely loyal to his loved ones.
Following a serious heart attack, Danny retired in 1995 to enjoy golfing, attend NASCAR races, watch various sports, socialize at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5578, organize Christmas food drives, and raise funds for local needs. Whenever there was a need in West Virginia, Danny generously stepped in to help, reflecting his deep love for community. He played a pivotal role in establishing the first Veterans Memorial monument honoring the Mothers of Veterans in Madison, WV, and participated in military Funeral Honors, presenting the U.S. burial flag to grieving families alongside his VFW comrades.
Danny received numerous accolades for his dedicated service to the VFW, as well as recognition from the American Legion and the United States Congress for his outstanding loyalty and volunteerism. He was honored by various VFW Post Commanders for his commitment and work ethic.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Lee C. Broom and Corba Broom; his brother, Alfred Bunyan Broom; his wife, Shirley Marie-Price Broom; a dear neighbor, Todd (Charles) Thomas; several close friends including but not limited to; Larry Williams, James Edward “Jimmy” Justice, and his beloved cat, Ace, initially banned from the house but somehow made it inside nightly for cool whip and canned tuna feasts.
He is survived by his son, Danny Lee Broom II (wife Vonda Broom); daughter Carrie Nicole Canoy (husband Shane Michael Canoy); grandchildren: Jourdan Paige Bushman (husband Charlton Matthew Bushman), Morgan Hannah Broom, Jace Smith, Brodie Smith, Canaan Canoy, and Islee Canoy; nephews: Alfred Dale Broom and Bill Broom; and nieces: Linda Arbogast (husband Sheldon) and Twila Franklin.
Even in his later years, despite struggling with increasing blindness from macular degeneration, Danny expressed gratitude each day that he still retained some sight. He maintained a great sense of humor, unabashedly flirting with the ladies, enjoying his “very own” spirits, and indulging his sweet tooth with dessert before meals, along with hot black coffee, cold Dr. Pepper, potato chips, popcorn, chocolate-covered donuts, and honey buns.
A service for close friends, cherished neighbors, and family will be held on November 12, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV, officiated by Pastor Gary Durham. Burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Logan County, WV. Military graveside honors will be performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 of Madison, WV. Pallbearers chosen to carry Danny to his final resting place will include Larry Saunders, Roger Gillenwater, Johnny Saunders, Curtis Mayhorn, Larry Rice, and Roy Gene.
The family extends special thanks to his longtime neighbors, Brenda Ellis and Larry Poveromo, as well as the incredible friends, caregivers, and therapists at Charleston Area Memorial Hospital, Riverside Health and Rehabilitation, Friendship South Rehabilitation, Brent Poff, Ben Plunkett, Michelle Andrews and the entire dedicated team of professionals from the Salem Terrace Assisted Living, Salem Terrace Dogwood Memory Care Center, and the compassionate, invaluable angels of Good Samaritan Advanced Illness Care Hospice. Sonu Chavla, Kendra Morris, and the entire Good Sam team made certain Danny received exceptional care, respect, and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the consideration of donations to Good Samaritan Hospice at 4751 Cove Road, Roanoke, VA 24017 or GoodSam.care would be welcomed.
