CURTIS GLEN AKERS, 84, of Hewett, WV was ushered into Heaven on March 1, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 22, 1939, in Whitesville WV, to the late Dave and Nessell Akers of Hewett, WV. Also preceding him in death are three brothers: Earl, Phillip, and Richard; one great grandson Luke; and several special in-laws.
Akers, #12, could be found at many ballfields from the time he was 14 until the age of 81, when he finished his softball career in the Charleston Senior Softball League. He was a member of Meadow Fork Freewill Baptist Church for the last 57 years, and he loved his time with the Spruce River Seniors Citizens. Curtis divided his time well with his sons: bear hunting with Chad, coon hunting with Glen, and rabbit hunting with Joey. He loved his grandchildren more than anything. He’d look at all the girls and say proudly, “we have a lot of babies coming.” A lot of babies have come indeed. Curtis was Pawpaw to 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Curtis was a coal miner at Westmoreland Coal Company for 39 years and a proud member of the UMWA.
He will be missed by his wife of 65 years Genevieve; sons: Curtis Joe Akers (Libby) of Burlington, NC; Glen Akers (Dawn) of Madison; Chad Akers (Kelli) of Lake; and daughters: Gina Roblee (Dan) of Saint Albans; and Paula Gertz (Kevin) of Hewett.
Curtis is also survived by his brothers: Sharol Akers of Carpentersville, Illinois and Leon Akers of North Lake, Illinois, and sisters: Patsy Duffey of Danville, WV and Peggy Bullen of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois.
Visitation will take place Saturday, March 9, 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Handley Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service on Sunday March 10 at 11:00 am at Handley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Akers Mountain Cemetery in Lake, WV.
Arrangements are in the care of Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV.
The family would like to give a special thank you to everyone who took the time to have a conversation or share a laugh with Curtis; you were his blessing.
