Clayton B Alford, 72, of Sod, WV went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 28th, 2026 at home surrounded by family after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Bruce (Bun) and Jessie Alford. He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, June O’Dell, whom he adored and cared so much for; two brothers Jimmie Alford and Joe Alford; and a great-granddaughter Journi Ann Stotler.
He retired from the West Virginia State Police in 1998 as the detachment commander in Logan. He was a member of the West Hamlin United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of the Hamlin Lodge #79, a member of Scottish Rite, and the Hamlin Chapter #106; Order of the Eastern Star.
He had a deep love for his community and a heartfelt vision to create a place where people could come together to celebrate life’s meaningful moments. In 2016, he began building what would become known as the Hope Center - a space dedicated to bringing families, friends, and neighbors together. Through his dedication and generosity, he created more than just a building; he created a lasting place of connection, fellowship, and cherished memories for all who walk through its doors.
He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Libby Alford; his 4 children Michelle (Justin) Tyler, Michael (Amanda) Alford, Jeremy (Angel) White, and Kaycie (Elijah) Harper; Grandchildren, Colton (Ashley) Stotler, Garik Tyler, Trinity Barker, Mason (Abbie) White, Justin Barker, Hayden White, Jessie Tyler, Owen Harper, Aubrey Cook and Abigail Harper; Great-grandchildren, Aria Stotler and another on the way; sisters Doris Jean (Ercil) Parsons, Darlene (Steve) Neil, Phyllis (David) Handley; brother, Kenny Alford; sister-in-law Lola Alford; special friends Dana Evans and Eddie Johnson; also a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the ICU at Thomas Memorial Hospital, the staff of Encompass Health and Rehab, Pulmonary Associates (esp Jamie Spencer and Caitlin Johnson), and Dr. Julie Haddy for the past exceptional care he received over the last 7 months.
The visitation will be held at Handley’s Funeral Home in Hamlin on Friday, April 3rd, 2026 from 6-8pm and the Funeral Service on Saturday, April 4th, 2026 at 11am with Pastor Tom Jeffrey and Timothy Spratt presiding. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hope Center, PO Box 328, West Hamlin, WV 25571.
