Alice Loraine
McClure
Jul 15, 1943 — Sep 25, 2026
Alice Loraine McClure, 83, of Madison, WV passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026.
Born on July 15, 1943 at home at Manila WV, Alice graduated from Scott High School in 1962. She started work at the Boone County Courthouse in the Circuit Clerks Office for Maxey Mullins, working with the court docket. She then went to work at Westmoreland Coal Co. working in the main administration office. She went back to work at the Boone County Courthouse, working again in the Circuit Clerks Office for Sonny Howell, working for 28 years until her retirement. She loved her job working for Sonny saying he was the best boss she ever worked for. During her second time at the Circuit Clerks Office, she attained the highest position of Chief Deputy Circuit Clerk. Just prior to her retirement in 2011, she was asked by the Mayor of Madison, Sonny Howell, to become the City of Madison Municipal Judge. Alice loved working as the Municipal Judge and especially loved working with the ladies in the City of Madison Administration office. She also enjoyed working for current mayor, Buddy Hudson as well as all of the City of Madison Police Officers.
Community service was very important to Alice, as she was a member for many years of the Boone Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, helping welcome and guide people as they visited the hospital. She always tried to brighten the day for the patients and visitors. She was involved in politics for a time, running for office to become a member of the Boone County Board of Education, going door to door discussing how important the education system was to her and the people of Boone County. She was very active in the PTA and all of her children’s school activities. She was a member of the Scott High School athletic boosters, and Band Boosters, working many games in the concession stand.
She was a devout member of the Manila Church of Christ and was a long time member of the church choir singing each Sunday and visiting other churches to perform songs. During World War II, her mother, Mabel Hill, and other women in the community, kept the church going by holding services and keeping the lights on. Alice was very proud of her family’s history concerning the church.
Alice enjoyed the outdoors, squirrel hunting for years and fishing her whole life. One of her favorite outdoor activities was visiting her family’s camp near White Sulphur Springs, where she fished for smallmouth bass and trout with her brother Mike, and her grandson, D.R. She enjoyed attending the WV State Fair each year with her family and especially enjoyed watching the draft horse pulls. She was an avid golfer, starting in her early 20’s and continuing into her late 70’s, golfing with family and friends, and attending the Greenbrier Classic each year. She was a member of the Danville Women’s Softball team for many years, playing in the outfield and she was known for her speed. Later on her granddaughter Sara played softball throughout college and Alice often remarked that Sara played just like her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mabel Hill, her brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Sheridan Hill, her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Jim Turnbull, her sisters Margaret and Martha Hill, sister-in-law Yvonne Hill, and her grandson D.R. Browning.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Browning (Barry); son, Rich McClure (Colleen); grandchildren, Sara Rider (Dakota), Luke McClure, Elizabeth (Kyle) Ley, and Trey (Adri) McClure; brother, Ralph Hill; best friends, Becky White and Elgena Jarrell; grandsons, Blake Pennell and Austin Pennell; and great grandson, Carson Ashworth.
