Aleta Jane Stover
“Janie” — “Granny” to so many
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Aleta Jane Stover, lovingly known as “Janie” and “Granny,” on February 15, 2026.
Born September 9, 1956, in Madison, West Virginia, Janie spent her life loving fiercely and giving selflessly. She made her home in Wharton, WV, but her true home was wherever her family was. If you were lucky enough to know her, you were lucky enough to be loved by her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ara and Lonita Barker, and her beloved daughter, Gina Renee Gunnoe — a loss she carried in her heart every day.
Janie was married to Rodger Stover for 33 years. As a devoted homemaker, she poured her life into caring for those she loved. Her greatest title wasn’t wife or mother — it was “Granny.” And she wore that name with pride.
She was a proud and loving mother to Jason (Jennifer) Curry (her baby boy) of Wharton, WV; Bobby (Rachel) Stover of Pineville, WV; Rodger (Kim) White of Danville, WV; and Roger (Laurie) Bennett of Lewisburg, WV. But her love didn’t stop there. Over the years, she “inherited” many sons and daughters who she claimed as her own, because that’s just who she was. If you needed a mom, a hug, a safe place, or someone in your corner — she was there.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren: Gabby Stover, Isaiah Stover, Cassandra Cook, Cavin White, Connor White, Caston White, Brad Tackett, Corey Burdette, Caitlyn Montgomery, Aaron White, Isiah Perdue, Jordyn Irick, Jacob Legg, Jessika Legg, Weston Gunnoe, Lacy Patriacca, Adam Patriacca, and Amber Beverage — along with 17 great-grandchildren who were the absolute light of her life.
Granny had the biggest heart. She loved loud, she loved hard, and she loved without conditions. Her home was always open. Her arms were always ready. And her love was constant.
The world feels a little less warm without her in it — but her love will continue through every grandbaby she held, every meal she cooked, every hug she gave, and every life she touched.
Services will be held Friday, February 20, 2026, at Handley’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens in Madison, WV. Handley’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
She may be gone from our sight, but she will never be gone from our hearts.
