Margaret Luella Halstead

October 5, 1928 — March 16, 2014

MARGARET LUELLA CAMPBELL VICKERS HALSTEAD born on October 5, 1928, in Charleston, WV, to the union of Gladys Hanshaw and Cameron Campbell, Margie left this life on Sunday, March 16, 2014, in CAMC Memorial Hospital in the Open Heart Recovery Unit after a valiant four- week struggle. She left this earth as she lived: quietly and peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. In addition to her parents, her loving husband, Woodrow Vickers; her son, Joel Cameron Vickers; her sister, Karen Taylor; and a host of cousins and old friends have greeted her in heaven.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 34 years, Frank Joe Halstead; her four children: Anne V. and Keith Phipps of Danville; Jane V. and Zachary Cline of Titusville, FL; James Vickers of Palm Bay, FL; and Edward and Kozan Halstead of Foster, WV. Grandchildren include Eddie and Brandi Vickers, Jeffrey Vickers, Joel Phipps, Kodie Halstead, Kris Halstead, Katie Cline, and Sarah Cline, and several great-grandchildren. Her siblings also survive her: Betty and Robert Kinder; James and Betty Campbell; and brother-in-law, George and Patricia Vickers; in addition to nieces and nephews: Sue Anne Kinder, Elizabeth Stanton, Drs. James and Yolanda Campbell, Dr. John and Amanda Campbell, Rhonda and Les Beassie, and Sherry and Norman Howard.

Margaret modeled a Christian life, in that her kindness and caring were evidenced in her generosity and treatment of others. She was not perfect, but she worked daily on being a light in a dark world. She was a member of the Rock Creek Church of Christ where she was active with the church bulletin and the Ladies Bible Study. The inability to attend services the past several months was so disappointing to her. The faithful church members, especially Judy and Billy Cabell, who visited her on a regular basis made her so thankful.

Margaret graduated from Morris Harvey College and later attended graduate school at Marshall University. She was an educator in the Boone County School system for 34 years, where she taught and served as a county reading specialist for 11 years. She was a consummate teacher and loved learning, imparting knowledge, and writing.

She spent part of the last 20 years of her life researching family history and compiling several books for family members. She generously shared her wealth of writing and has left quite a legacy.
The family would like to thank the team of doctors who provided excellent care with dignity and devotion. In addition, we wish to thank the nursing and respiratory staff in the Open Heart Recovery Unit for their extreme kindness and gentle care to both Margaret and the family over the last four weeks.

Service will be 2:00 pm Friday, March 21, 2014 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville conducted by John Duty, Minister. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison. Her grandsons, Eddie and Jeffery Vickers, Kodie and Kris Halstead, Joel Phipps, and special friend, Grant Mason will carry her to her final resting place.

Visitation is 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
