Gloria Jewel Chambers

June 12, 1934 — September 19, 2022

Gloria Jewel Chambers, 88, of Lick Creek Rd., Danville WV, passed away Monday, September 19, 2022 without disturbance. She was found with her puzzle book and pen in hand, as if she had just fallen asleep.

Jewel was born June 12, 1934, the youngest child of Lomer Leslie & Fannie Bailey Greene. She was the last surviving member of that family. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Garnet Harper and Janice Turner, as well as her six brothers: Clifford, Silbert, Lowell, Carson, Wandell and Maxwell. All of the Greene family members were accomplished and known for their work ethic, and they are well-known throughout the area. Fannie was the beloved "Mommie" of us all. Clifford was an outstanding musician. Silbert perished heroically at the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944 and rests in the Cambridge American Cemetery Memorial at Cambrigdeshire, England. Maxwell was one of the most well-known and respected men in Charleston for decades. He was the ultimate Policeman, that others admired and all wanted to follow.

Mrs. Jewel Chambers is the widow of Mr. Jesse Willard Chambers of more than 20 years. He was the Vice-President of the former Boone National Bank, and was Traffic Court Judge of Boone County. They belonged to many civic and political organizations and were well-received by all who knew them.
Jewel was a homemaker, and a wonderful cook. She is most remembered for her delicious hot rolls and cakes. Jewel raised tiny bantam roosters and various types of chickens and birds for many years. She would open the door and pet squirrels would come out of the hills and into her dining room, to be fed from her hand daily. Her heart and good nature is best defined by the way she treated the tiny animals and dogs. She was involved with the Boy Scouts as a Den Mother and was active in the PTA when her children were at Mooney Grade School. She was always active in church. She was a talented singer and sang in a well-loved quartet with her brother Lowell, sister Janice and the beloved Louise Lacy, then later in a trio with Ozella Sosebee & Jimmy Miller.

All three of Jewel and Billy Mitchell's children are musically talented, however Billy Dean is most well-known for his musical accomplishments and we are most proud of his contributions. This was a running joke; Jewel insisting the talent came from the Greene's and Billy claiming it was from his Dad, their Papaw Mitchell.

Billy and Jewel Mitchell Chambers are survived by three children: Billy Dean Mitchell and wife Karen; Debbie and Tim Dunlap; and Michael "Pete" Mitchell and Friend Dow M. Ooten. She has six Grandchildren: Beth Price, Amanda & Rob Rivest, and Rachel & Jackie Jarrell; Angie & Daniel Russ; Jamie "Bernie" & Shawna Riffe and Joshua Dane Riffe. She has eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Jewel is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who will also miss her deeply. We truly believe Earth's loss is Heaven's Gain.. AMEN.
