Thomas M. "Tommy" Hager

July 28, 1940 — August 31, 2013

Thomas M. “Tommy” Hager, 73, of Madison, WV departed this life on earth on August 31, 2013 at Boone Memorial Hospital from complications from an accident that occurred on May 31st.

He was born on July 28, 1940 at Six Mile (Ramage) WV. He was the son of Curtis R. and Erma D. (Hager) Hager. He spent 91 days in various hospitals.

He was a retired disabled coal miner having worked as a UMWA miner and at the time of his retirement was general mine foreman for Bethlehem Mines 131 at Van, WV. He was a US Army Veteran, a member of the Madison Odell Lodge, Eastern Star, Logan Lodge of Perfection and the Beni Kedem Shrine Legion of Honor. He was also a member of the Six Mile United Methodist Church. He and his wife were baptized together in the mid 1970’s. Tommy was known for his love and compassion for his family, friends, God and country. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family watching WVU and Scott High School sports, traveling and auto racing including stock car and drag racing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Amelia Anne, Mona Ellis, Aveonell Martin and Patricia Martin; brother, Max Hager; nephew, Joey Hager; and mother-in-law, Ruth Dolin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Renee; sons, Michael Scott (Beth) Hager and Craig Linn (Whitney) Hager; grandson, Lance Corporal Gregory Neal Hager; granddaughter, Scotti Ann Hager; step-grandchildren, Dean Michael Eggenschwiller, David Price and Ashley Ball; four step great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard R. Hager; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

A military and masonic funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with Paul Eldridge and the Rev. Roger McCauley officiating. Entombment will follow at Memory Gardens, Madison with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison, WV. Pallbearers will be brethren of the Odell Lodge. Honorary pallbearers include Michael Ball, Mark Morris, Derrick Massey, Billy Brown, Jr., Mike Castle, Josh Cogar, Matt Browning and Brandon Ball.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the funeral home.
