Phillip Crouse

Phillip Crouse Sr. 87, of Wharton, WV passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 21, 2013.
He was born July 3, 1927 son of the late Addie (Osborne) Lusk and late step-father Guy Lusk. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Athylene; daughter, Betty Jean Beck; brothers, Roy, John, Robert and Lawrence Lusk, and Arthur and Jesse Crouse; and sister, Jenny.
He was a retired Coal Miner with 24 years of service, last working as a Joy Operator, a member of Local 1503, Lorado and a member of UMWA. Having only a 4th grade education he was a self taught carpenter and did local carpenter work for about 25 years building several houses in the area. He worked in many of the local churches. One of his fondest memories that he spoke of often was installing a baptistry at the Gordon Missionary Baptist Church. He worked at the Cazy Freewill Baptist Church on their kitchen, did major renovation inside and out at the Greenwood Church of God and also worked several times inside and out at the Bim Freewill Baptist Church.
He was an avid baseball and football fan and would watch any team. He had a heart of gold and great love for people.
He is survived by son, Phillip Jr. and Teresa of Wharton; daughter, Shelia Workman and son-in-law Robert of Wharton; sisters-in-law, Velma Brown of Pageland, SC whom he reared as a daughter and Mary Stapleton of Madison, Ohio; brother, Russell Lusk of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, Kevin, Jefff, Angie, Berea, George and Logan; three step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 27 at Greenwood Church of God with Donald Elam and David Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison. Pall bearers will be Kevin Browning, George Workman, Logan Crouse, Jeff Browing, Jackie Hodges and Andrew Hodges.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday at the church.
