Lincoln Douglas Miller

November 23, 1945 — November 6, 2017

Lincoln Douglas Miller, 71, of Foster, Boone County, West Virginia, succumbed to Renal Cell Carcinoma and Congestive Heart Failure on Monday, November 6, 2017. “Doug”, as he was known to his friends, was the son of the late Lon and Dollie Legg Miller, grandson of Dryden and Rosabelle Helen McClure Miller, grandson of John Lincoln and Mary Elizabeth Legg, great-grandson of A.B. and Mary Pauley Miller, and great-great grandson of Jonathan and Mary Poly Turley Miller. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Lon J. Miller, Denver R. (Helen) and Robert L. Miller. Doug is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Halstead Miller; daughter Tonda (Gregg) Lee, and their two children, Peyton and Madison of Fort Worth, Texas; son, Dr. James Dryden (Lisa) Miller, and their two children, Taylor and Jonathan of Corbin, Kentucky; and son, Douglas Ryan (Amy) Miller, and their son, Ari B. Miller of Lexington, Kentucky. Doug is survived by his brother William “Bill” Miller, and two sisters-in-law Elizabeth Foy Miller and Ellen Spradling.
The tapestry of Doug’s life threads together great adventure, obedient studies, masterful craft, absolute love, and complete devotion. His life adventures began at the age of eight when he became a Boy Scout; eventually achieving the rank of Life Scout. He subsequently served as past Scoutmaster and remained Troop 85’s Scout Executive until death. Following his studies at Scott High School, Doug was drafted into the United States Army. After completing his time of service, he obtained a degree in Fire Science Engineering. Those studies laid the foundation for him to begin to craft a rich and robust professional mastery which spawned 43 years of service and devotion to the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industry. Doug held the position of Fire Chief for 36 years for United States Steel, Ashland Oil; and subsequently, Marathon Oil. During which, Doug worked to suppress 42 tank fires, many oil and gas well fires, five ship fires, literally hundreds of industrial refinery and petrochemical fires around the world. He was honored to be the Chief and Chairman of the largest mutual aid group in the world known as Channel Industries Mutual Aid (CIMA) in Houston, Texas, and the first President of the FBI’s Kentucky InfraGard. Doug was an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University for 23 years, training industrial fire fighters from all over the world. His adventurous spirit, coupled with his absolute love for Karen, led the two of them to reside in various corners of the world throughout their shared life, including: Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Houston, Texas; Catlettsburg, Kentucky; and Equatorial Guinea, West Africa. In his final years of life, Doug traveled from New Mexico to Saudi Arabia to continue to teach firefighting skills and write procedural manuals that employ the latest in fire safety best practices – many of which were first instituted by his own hands as Chief.
A man of great devotion, Doug was humbled to be appointed an Elder in the Foster Church of Christ in 1999, where he taught and preached the word of God until his last breath.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, November 11th at 11a at the Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia. Elder Nate Dolin will officiate. Visitation hours will be on Friday, November 10th from 5-8p. The Catlettsburg Refinery Fire Department, KY Station 81, will attend the casket. Chief Miller will be buried with Fire Fighter Honors in the Halstead-Cabell Family Cemetery in Foster.
