Floria Amerie Baisden Thompson

Floria Amerie Baisden Thompson, 78 , of Sharples, West Virginia went to Heaven to be with the Lord on June 15, 2014 at home following her battle with brain cancer. She left this world and walked through the gates of Heaven surrounded by her family and friends whom love and cherish her deeply.

She was a member of Coal Valley FWB Church and also attended Cox’s Fork FWB Church. She dedicated her life to God at the age of nine. She served the Lord and was a light and blessing to everyone by singing his praises. Her favorite songs were “I Don’t Want Nothing Here to Hinder Me” and “I’m a Winner Either Way”.

She was born January 11, 1936 in Greenview, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Roy and Mellie Cooper Baisden of Greenview. She married her husband, Russell L Thompson on April 6, 1953. They were married 61 years when her lifelong friend and sweetheart passed away on July 31, 2009. They were the blessed parents of five children.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Russell L Thompson; son, Russell O. Thompson; mother, Mellie Cooper Baisden; father, Roy Baisden and stepmother, Falcy Baisden; sister, Evangeline Fizer; brother, Roy Linford Baisden; grandson, Roger Ball, Jr. and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

She attended Southern West Virginia Community College. She worked for Pride in Logan County as a Head Start and Home Start teacher from September 1974 to June 1982. She was the first person in Logan County to complete the Child Development Course and received her CDA (Child Development Associate) Degree on January 1, 1979. She received her Home Start Training Certificate in May 1979. Until her illness she was a volunteer at the Spruce River Senior Citizen Center.

Surviving are her four children, Ronda (Harley) Egnor of Danville, WV, Timothy (Donna) Thompson of Danville, WV, Bonnie (Ronnie) Montgomery of Sumerco, WV and Micah (Tina) Thompson of Fayetteville, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Debra Diane Thompson of Danville, WV; sisters, Blemia Bennett of Navarre, Ohio and Renee Baisden Ball of Danville, WV; brothers, William (Loretta) Baisden of Danville, WV and Douglas (Charlotte) Baisden of East Bank, WV.

She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Brandon Raikes, Casey Higginbotham, Joseph Egnor, Tietjen Thompson, Kevin Thompson, Tammy Noonan, Bonnie Jean Scott, Ronnie Montgomery, Amerie Kent, Elisha Thompson, Russell Lee Thompson, Christopher Thompson, A.J. Thompson and Flora Thompson; 29 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to give thanks to Hospice and special thanks to Stephanie Akers, her nursing aide, Melanie Martin, R.N. for her care, compassion and friendship, and Rev. Robbie Gollihue, the Hospice Chaplain for his guidance and friendship. The family would like to thank everyone who called, visited, brought food and prayed for her.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with her son-in-law, the Rev. Harley Egnor and the Rev. Robbie Gollihue officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Cemetery, Greenview. Her grandsons will be pallbearers.

The family will accept friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
