Davis Earl Akers

November 2, 1931 — April 9, 2014

Davis Earl “Punkin” Akers 82 went to be with his heavenly family on April 9, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Marlene; his parents Dave and Nessell Akers; and his brother Phillip.
Earl retired after 46 years from Westmoreland Coal, where he played fast-pitch softball for many years and was known as one of the best pitchers in the state.
Earl loved his family, his church and his community, ministering to countless people through his Sunday School class, visiting the sick and taking care of many funerals as a lay minister. He was the first person everyone reached out to and he always made time to provide comfort to those in need in his kind and loving way.
He will be greatly missed by wife; Mary, children Jeri Lynn Adkins (A.T.Miller), Randy (Karen) Akers, and Pam (Rodney) Campbell, grandchildren; Randi (Roger) Hager, Brandon (Amy) Akers, Brett, Brittany and Brooke Campbell, great grandchildren; Holly and Alex Hager and Jada Akers. Also surviving are twin sisters Patsy and Peggy, brothers; Richard, Curtis, Sharol and Leon.
We were all truly blessed to have such a wonderful man in our lives.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 Spencer United Methodist Church, Hewett with Rev. Roger McCauley and Harold Ray Ball officiating, and a special prayer by Richard Darnell. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.
Friends may call after 6pm at the church Friday, April 11.
Words cannot fully express our gratitude to Drs. Harris, Nagarajan and Grey whose expert care gave us five more years to enjoy our Dad; to our Hospice angels Sally, Laura and Paula, Boone Chapter; and to his faithful church family visitors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made in Earl’s honor to Spencer United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 290, Hewett, WV 25l08 or Hospice 67 Main St. Madison, WV 25130.
