Christine Walls McLaughlin, 90, daughter of Chester and Nona Spears Walls, passed away Dec. 24, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons’s disease at Hillcrest Health Care, Danville.

Chris was a kind thoughtful person with an outgoing personality. She was employed in various fields throughout her life. She was a “Rosie the Riveter” at a defense plant in California during World War II, owned a restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico and a clerk in a coal company store at Cameo, WV. She was a familiar fixture in Madison where she lived. She worked at Browning-Steel Furniture Company and finally at the Glover Clinic. She moved to Largo, Florida in 1968. She returned to her beloved mountains in 1982. In 2004 her book of poetry “Truth, Trivia and Treasures” was published. This book reflects some of her trials and strife.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husbands, Bill McCallister, M.L. “Jimmy” Hill Sr. and R.E. McLaughlin, Sr.; sister, Verna Nelson Thompson; brothers, Roma, Johnny, Lonzo, Lee, D.J., Cecil, Fonzo and Otto Walls; infant son, John Eric Hill; daughter, Janice Hill Meadows; granddaughter, Lisa Bays Crichfield; sons-in-law, Jack Meadows and James “Jimmy” Smith; and one great-grandson, Zachary Bays Hunter.

She is survived by sons, Rev. Dr. Maxwell L. (Debbie) Hill, Jr. of St. Albans, “Butch” R.E. McLaughlin, Jr. of Mexico, Phillip (Marie) McLaughlin of Florida; daughters, Barbara (Jack) Bays of Elkview, Joyce Smith (Bill) Saul of Morrisvale and Judy (Jim) Newton of California; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 27 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
