Bill Joe Gillenwater

August 9, 1946 — April 8, 2018

Bill Joe Gillenwater, follower of Christ, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, went to be with the Lord on April 8, 2018. He was born August 9, 1946. He will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Gillenwater; his mother, Betty Martin Gillenwater; and his cousins, Jim and Donna Jean Gillenwater.

He was a member of West Madison Baptist Church and was the Sunday school teacher for adults for several years. His love for the Lord was evident in his professional life as well as his personal life. He was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America and was a Troop Master for several years. He served in the U.S. Navy from December 29, 1965 until October 28, 1969 as a 2nd Class Communication Technician. He worked for Federal Mine Safety Health Administration as an inspector supervisor. He retired from there then worked as a WV State Mine Inspector for six years before his retirement there.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Hunter Gillenwater; daughters, Abbey Hunter and Marissa Adkins Gillenwater; Erica Gillenwater White (John), Jon Gillenwater (Nicole) and Stephen Gillenwater (Crystal); grandchildren, Adrianna Mitchell, Brittney Page (James), Emily Hartman, Cara White, Gabriel White and Taylor White Williams; great-grandchildren, Jase Moore, Aleyah Page, and Kendal Maynard; former wife, Judy Cox Sorgman; ex-sister-in-law, Jeanie Fisher; brother, Roger Gillenwater (Donna); sister, Claudia Greear (Kyle); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He came from a large family and joined a large family to make one extra large family! He will live on in the hearts of many people.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14 at West Madison Baptist Church with James Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Family Gardens, Madison with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone Post VFW Post 5578, Madison, WV.

Arrangements are by Handley Funeral Home in Danville.
